Elio Motors introduced over 20 key suppliers including Altair Engineering, IAV, NEWTECH 3, and Comau as key suppliers of their brand new, American-made vehicle yesterday at the Troy, Michigan headquarters of Altair.

A prototype of the three-wheel vehicle was revealed by Paul Elio right after announcing the suppliers.

Founder and CEO of Elio Motors Paul Elio and Ken Way, Elio Motors Board Member and former Chairman and CEO of Lear Corporation led the announcement with words from engineering services firm Altair, engine design partner IAV, circuit board and harness manufacturer NEWTECH 3, and advanced manufacturing services firm Comau.

The Elio Motors new prototype showcases a three-wheeled vehicle design that can achieve 84MPG with an anticipated 5-star safety rating, all starting at $6,800.

The prototype was revealed to the public yesterday morning, marking the start of a tour where the vehicle will travel from Troy to Shreveport, LA, then onto St. Louis and Kansas City, with stops in additional markets to be added.

Elio continued, “We are excited to have the new prototype available and are looking forward to sharing the design changes with our future customers in the coming months.”

The vehicle will be produced in Shreveport, Louisiana, in a plant that GM previously used for assembly.

The vehicle is scheduled for production in the summer of 2014 and reservations are being accepted now. Potential owners can reserve vehicles for as little as $100. Reservations allow potential owners a spot on the delivery list in the first year in production depending on their reservation level, access to the Elio Motors e-newsletter, a bumper sticker, and a limited edition t-shirt. Omega Processing still makes house calls. Its technicians install and help customers with software on-site, while rivals offer remote assistance or help by phone.

Quality customer service is why Omega is celebrating 10 years in business after expanding into five new markets last year, president and co-founder Todd McHugh says: “We don’t just send out a box with instructions.”

Founded in January 2003, the Fort Thomas-based payment processing firm more than doubled its office space last year. It projects it could reach $2 billion annually in electronic payment processing volume within the next two years.

“When we started out, our vision was to be a sales organization,” McHugh says. “We found a nice niche where we could have the same look and feel as the big guys. As we got into it, we learned that, if you weren’t controlling all aspects of it, you couldn’t control the customer experience.”

Improving the customer experience has helped Omega more than double its revenues from 2008 while increasing the number of merchants it serves from 3,510 to more than 6,700. The number of full-time employees has grown from 11 to 37.

Omega provides credit and debit card processing, point-of-sale (POS) and cash register systems, check guarantee and recovery, and business cash flow solutions.

“The key is providing customers good service at a fair price, and dealing with them honestly,” says Scott Anderson, chief executive and co-founder.

Nearly two years ago, Omega stopped hiring contractors and began recruiting and training its own team of experienced sales people.

“It’s not just hiring someone who can sell, we wanted to get a higher level of salesperson, and train them to be effective in the marketplace,” Anderson said. “What we saw was an increase in sales and size of the merchants. Our retention of larger accounts has been good.”

In addition to changing its hiring philosophy, Omega also began a rigorous training program that helped alter its sales pitch, which now requires different lines of questioning and more of an account management approach to selling. “It’s not just, ‘Here’s your price,’ ” Anderson said. “It’s getting to know their business. Asking questions takes you down a different path. We’re able to find solutions for customers.”

Said Don Walser, business manager at Perfect Game USA, one of the largest privately owned baseball scouting and recruiting companies: “They are in constant contact with us. There are online processing issues anywhere, with anyone. But any time we’ve had issues, Omega has been Johnny-on-the-spot.”

Omega’s goal is to one day reach $20 million in revenues and 100 employees.

McHugh says: “It comes down to trust and building relationships.”
